Gladiator
Created by Kevin Vlack With the support of the illiView project and the assistance of illiView team members: George Francis, Alex Bourd, Chris Hartman, and Glenn Chappell. Gladiator is a high paced interactive virtual environment game created for the CAVE. Controls:Running:Start vss2.2 on the sound server machine from the directory in which the Gladiator executable resides. Type soccer.hall at the prompt to start the application. The sound is operating correctly if you hear a bell clang followed by black while the textures are loading in. This takes about 2 minutes. Then the calibrationa and training phase begins. Since the navigation depends on gestures which strongly depend on the length of your reach, do what it says and extend your arm. If you want a faster game, cheat and don't stretch out all the way. During the quiet training stage just practice moving, fetching and shooting the balls. Moving: The horizontal vector from your waist to the wand is the current velocity vector. But there is a transition, so don't expect to move or stop (draw hand to hip) instantly. Always hold the wand horizontally, never vertically. Turn the wand about its axis, like a doorknob, and you will turn about your own axis. This combination makes maneuvering (nearly) intuitive. Fetching: The left button simulates your hand grabbing a ball. When a ball is within feet of you and you THEN depress the left button the ball will jump to your hand. You can now carry the ball around with you until you release the button. Then the ball will shoot in the direction the wand is pointing. Shooting: Aim with your arm. Only Gene Autry could shoot from the hip. If you see the goal through the ball you've got a good aim. Release the ball. The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the wall (2point) or floor (1point) goals. Now press the right button for a timed and scored game to start. After 3 minutes the game is over. You can press the middle button to release yourself from the arena floor and fly about the scenery. But in this mode the thumbbutton is your accelerator, and your wand is the flying instrument. Pressing the right button starts the game over, beginning with a silent time for practice. The second click on the right button restarts a game. Have fun.
